Depreciation is the largest cost item of a car. AutoCalcul’s used-car valuation engine starts from an age curve calibrated on the Belgian market, then adjusts it for mileage, powertrain, body type, brand and condition.
The brand’s perception on the used-car market modulates depreciation (e.g. Toyota, Dacia, DS).
Leave blank if you do not know: the full calculation identifies it from its reliability catalogue.

Base curve: −17% in year 1, −12% in year 2, −10% in year 3, −9% in year 4, then −8.5 to −9% per year (partial years pro rata) Depreciation multipliers: body type × powertrain × brand × model × reliability × price range × gearbox Value adjustments: deviation from normal mileage (15,000 km/year), psychological thresholds (100,000 / 150,000 / 200,000 km), condition · floor 6% of new price (min. €500)
The used-car valuation engine starts from a depreciation curve by age, calibrated on thousands of Belgian listings (AutoScout24) and revalidated by an automated benchmark. Each factor (body type, powertrain, brand perception, known engine reliability, price range, gearbox) modulates the annual depreciation rate.
Mileage then acts on the value: a deviation from 15,000 km per year translates into a premium or an additional discount, with steps at the psychological thresholds of 100,000, 150,000 and 200,000 km. General condition and a floor value complete the calculation.
In the TCO, this valuation is anchored on the actual purchase price: resale value = purchase price × valuation at resale / valuation at purchase. When a RestWaardeBox market value is available, it takes priority.
About 17% of its new price on average on the Belgian market, then 12% in the second year and 10% in the third. After four years, a car is typically worth 55% of its new price; after eight years, about 35%.
Not in the first years, according to the 2026 benchmark of Belgian listings: at the new price actually paid, a recent electric car depreciates slightly more slowly than a petrol car up to three years, then at the same pace. The engine applies a multiplier by powertrain that depends on age, and re-accelerates depreciation from eight years, at the typical end of the battery warranty.
The market values a car relative to 15,000 km per year. Driving 30,000 km per year loses several points of value each year, and crossing 100,000 or 150,000 km causes an additional step in the prices displayed.
It is a statistical estimate, not an appraisal. In the TCO, it is replaced by the RestWaardeBox market value (private channel) when available, or by the value you enter.
