Brussels: federal rate by bracket (fiscal hp or kW, whichever is higher) × 1.2826, decreasing with age, minimum €78.88 Wallonia: base amount (bracket) × CO2 / 136 × MAM / 1,838 × energy coefficient, between €50 and €9,000, decreasing with age Flanders (BIV): indexed CO2 / Euro standard / age formula; electric: €0 before 2026, flat €61.50 since
The registration tax is due once, when the vehicle is registered in your name. Since regionalisation, each region has its own formula: Brussels indexes the federal rate based on power; Wallonia corrects this rate by the vehicle’s CO2 and mass (2025 reform); Flanders applies its BIV based on CO2 and Euro standard.
For a used car, the tax is reduced according to the vehicle’s age (10% per year in Brussels and Wallonia down to a floor; coefficient by age bracket in Flanders). Vehicles on renting stay at the non-indexed federal rate, as regional autonomy does not apply to leasing companies.
The calculator uses the exact function of the TCO engine. The tables are published on the rates page and checked against the regional simulators.
It depends on the vehicle. For a compact petrol car of 8 fiscal hp / 96 kW, Brussels charges €634.89, Flanders a few hundred euros depending on CO2, and Wallonia an amount that climbs quickly with CO2 and mass. For a heavy diesel SUV, Wallonia is the most expensive; for an electric car, Flanders remains the cheapest.
In Brussels, the minimum of €78.88 (€61.50 indexed). In Wallonia, the minimum of €50. In Flanders, €0 for a registration before 2026, then the flat €61.50 since 1 January 2026.
In Brussels and Wallonia, the amount falls by 10% per year of age (55% at 5 years, 35% at 9 years) down to the indexed floor of €61.50 from 15 years. In Flanders, an age coefficient applies within the BIV formula.
Yes. In Wallonia, the maximum authorised mass directly weights the amount since 2025: 2,100 kg instead of 1,838 kg raises the registration tax by 14%. In Flanders, the Euro standard and the particulate filter set the class of the BIV formula.
The vehicle is registered by the leasing company, to which regional autonomy does not apply: the non-indexed federal rate is due, with no electric exemption, even in Flanders.
